Carter’s: historic store ‘under offer’

The historic Carter’s Store in High St, Yea, may be sold to interests associated with the Yea and District Historical Society.

The iconic property, situated next to the Yea Shire Hall, was on the market through local real estate agent Deb Robinson, Expressions of interest were to be submitted to Ms Robinson by last Friday (Dec. 19).

The large property includes a retail area and residence, plus large yard space. The store was operated, including a period as the ‘Palais Cafe’, by the Carter family who moved to Yea after World War II from Wallacedale in the Western District.

Pat Carter, with brothers Tony and Leo, operated the business, succeeding their parents. Pat Carter (pictured) died in November 2017.  She had retired in the previous decade.

The Yea and District Historical Society have long been looking for a permanent home. Interests associated with the Society had previously looked at the possibility of buying the former Masonic Temple in High St, and the former State Savings Bank/Commonwealth Bank premises.
