Hume Highway closes

The Hume Freeway Euroa by-pass is closed in both directions due to increased fire activity in the area, Transport Victoria announced on Saturday (Jan. 4)

Motorists should avoid the area.

Southbound traffic will be diverted at Violet Town, via Murchison Violet Town Road.

Northbound traffic will be diverted at the Goulburn Valley Freeway interchange at Seymour.

It’s important to follow the directions of emergency services at all times as conditions can change quickly.

Significant fire activity in this area means there is potential for further road closures.

Driving during a bushfire is extremely dangerous and leaving early is the best way to avoid this situation. Motorists should follow the advice of any current warnings for affected areas.

Smoke from nearby fires has the potential to reduce visibility and poses a hazard, especially at night and in low-lying areas.

We suggest motorists use their headlights on low-beam to make sure they can see and be seen, even during the day.

Windows should be closed and air-conditioning set to recirculation to reduce the smell of smoke inside the car.

Drivers should increase the space between themselves and the vehicle in front to allow safe braking distance.

If visibility deteriorates and it becomes unsafe to continue driving, motorists should pull over. The use of hazard lights and parking off the roadway will help avoid collisions, which are common during bushfires.
