$50,000 for greyhound centre

$50,000 funding for the Greyhound Adoption Centre in Seymour, has been announced by State Agriculture Minister, Jaclyn Symes.

Ms Symes was in Seymour to announce the grant which will see the centre completely refurbished, which will help the organisation continue to deliver its work as it grows to meet the increasing demand for greyhounds as pets.

The launch kick-started the first day of a three-day Greyhound Adoption Bonanza where about 115 greyhounds are expected to find their forever home.

The Greyhound Adoption Program has been operating for more than 22 years, rehabilitating and rehoming about 9000 greyhounds; making it one of the world’s leading re-homing agencies for retired greyhounds.

Non-racing greyhounds do not need to be muzzled in public, thanks to changes that came into effect from January 1 this year initiated by the State Labor Government.

Non-racing greyhounds are still required to be leashed in public.

The Government isproviding animal welfare grants to not-for-profit organisations and groups that improve the welfare of Victoria’s companion animals.

“As someone with a proud family history in racing greyhounds, I am even more delighted to join the pet adopter club today – providing a loving home to a retired greyhound,” Ms Symes said.

“This grant will help the Seymour adoption centre enhance their work, and concentrate on delivering their great program.

“Given the Minister’s long family history in greyhound racing, I look forward to welcoming her at many more events like this and also at some of our premier race meetings,” said
